News of 2017

Since I have not posted for nearly a year I’m going to list events. I had a surprise just before all my 2016 Christmas Concerts – I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was no big deal though – I had the operation, & nearly a month of radiotherapy I’m fine, (& very lucky)

I wrote wind quintet Rhapsody & Riff, & the piano transcription of Zoo Tales, & had the operation.

My ‘Q the Music‘ & ‘Trialogues 3‘ was performed by Myriad Wind Quintet at a London Composers Forum concert in Putney. I started teaching myself the tenor horn, & had radiotherapy every day.

I wrote some music – can’t remember what, & decided it was time to give up teaching. I also reduced the orchestration of Zoo Tales from chamber orchestra to string 4tet & 2 wind.

Went to the Vibe Clarinet fest, & sold quite a few of my clarinet works.

I visited several schools to help them prepare for the Zoo Tales performance.

4 performances of Zoo Tales in Ealing schools, conducted by Lee Marchant, & featuring hundreds of children , & string 4tet, either a clarinet or an oboe, & me playing alto sax & treble recorder. Many thanks to my team of adult volunteers.

I played in the orchestra for the Ealing production of Noyes Fludde with hundreds of children, conducted again by Lee Marchant. I also wrote music for the English Brass Academy course in Croatia.

My Fanfare for Celebration was performed by Regent Brass in an open air concert at Westminster Abbey Gardens, & I went to Dartington, where I played baritone sax in the wind band, & big band. The wind band played two movements of my ‘Concerto Grosso‘ & the brass ensemble in which I played tenor horn , performed my arrangement of the Purcell Chaconne, with Paul Archibald’s excellent arrangement of the Prokofiev ‘Romeo & Juliet’.

London Composers’ Forum concerts

On June 17th & July 1st my friends in L.C.F. organised 2 concerts at ST Mary’s Putney, which is a beautiful venue just the other side of Putney Bridge (for me – the same side if you live South of the river) On the 17th I played my trumpet & piano piece ‘Proclaiming Joy’ with David Arditti playing the piano. I played it on soprano sax, as I don’t actually play the trumpet.

On July 1st Martin Jones & his wife Frances played my ‘Pastorale & Rumba’ and ‘First Summer’ for oboe & piano. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend this as I’d pulled the tendons in my right knee & couldn’t walk.

Both concerts contained an interesting variety of music, & if you ever get the chance to attend one of our concerts, you’re bound to find something you enjoy

Events of March 2016 – Birds & a Dragon

At the beginning of March I went down to Dorchester, as usual, for the performance of my ‘Buzzard or Kestrel?'(to the story by Richard Baker) and ‘Water Birds’ with Dorset orchestra, under the baton of Walter Brewster. I always enjoy that gig, as I’m able to play my alto sax with the orchestra, and the concert is very well supported.
From Dorchester, to the less scenic Acton, where the 400+ pupils of Berrymede Junior school performed my musical story ‘Wind Dragon’ with my wonderful volunteer adult orchestra of members of Ealing Chamber Music Club, Ealing symphony Orchestra, & various other orchestras from as far away as Amersham. A good time, & a good lunch was had by all. Many thanks to the musicians who volunteer every year to give the children this experience.

Dartington International Summer School

Brass on the Grass DartingtonI have just returned from a brilliant week at Dartington. I participated in Wind Band, conducted by Steve Dummer, where we played works by Milhaud, & Horawitz, as well as two movements from my Memories & Myths in an informal concert at the end of the week.
I also played my baritone sax as the tuba for the brass group, when we played ‘Brass on the Grass’ performance, led by Paul Archibald. I continued to play baritone sax in the Big Swing Band which ended the week, by playing for the Lindy hop dancers, and everyone else, to dance & party. It is great to see so many friends there every year. The picture is of our ‘Brass on the Grass’ performance. We weren’t actually on the grass. The spectators were.

A very busy 2015!

This year has been phenominally busy, so I’ll just make a list:

March 2015

My usual visit to Dorchester for the orchestral version of Dave the Musical Caveman, Dorset Chamber orchestra with narrator Martin Clunes. This year I re wrote it to include young recorder players from Cerne Abbbas school.

Rainbow Island with adult orchestra of my ECMC, ESO, & other orchestral friends and all the children of Berrymede Junior School. There are loads of great pictures, which I’ve added to the gallery.

The memorial concert at Ealing Chamber Music Club for Anthea Sharma, founder member, who died in September last year. At the end on an evening of chamber music, we formed an orchestra & performed my Elegy, which I wrote for the occasion.

May & June

These busy months were spent writing and/or arranging music for large brass ensembles for English Brass Academy (under the direction of Paul Archibald) courses in Kuwait & Croatia. Also preparing the vast Berrymede recorder orchestra & guitar club, & kids in general for our Berrymede Talent Festival to be held in early July. I finished the arrangement for the Ealing Chamber Music Club’s Summer Sing/Play along Abba medley. & performed my Seeking Zamfir & Two Turkish Dances with a string trio at an Ealing Chamber Music Club concert.

Berrymede talent Fest – A whole week of performance events involving all 400 children.

London Composers’ Forum concert in Central London, in which John Holland, Owen Phillips & I performed my Reeds & Rhythm for soprano, & baritone saxes & drums.

Rehearing with Owen and John for the LCF performance, 2015

The big end of year Ealing Chamber Music Club extravaganza ending with everyone singing & playing my arrangement of Abba songs. It was so enjoyable.

A week in Sibernik, Croatia, with English Brass Academy. They played 8 of my compositions/arrrangements in 3 concerts in spectacular venues. There are many pictures & recordings & a brilliant slideshow on facebook.
